Researching the systems that support cultures of language learning

Transforming Cultures of Language-Learning (TransCoLL) is a major research project exploring the factors that shape cultures of language learning across Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland.

The project is now underway, bringing together researchers from the University of Stirling, Cardiff University, Dublin City University, Queen’s University Belfast and the University of London. Led by Professor Fiona Barclay, Professor of French Studies at the University of Stirling, the team is examining the social, cultural, educational and policy factors that influence language learning across the four jurisdictions.

Across the UK, participation in formal language learning has declined significantly over recent decades. Ireland provides an important point of comparison, with higher levels of participation in international language learning and growth in the number of language teachers.

TransCoLL is exploring why language learning develops differently in different places and what helps create sustainable and diverse cultures of language learning. The research brings together a range of perspectives, including learners’ experiences in schools and communities, the role of families and wider society, language education policy, teacher recruitment and retention, and the use of technology in language classrooms.

The project is organised around four Work Packages. WP1 looks at learners’ experiences and the wider factors that influence language learning. WP2 explores the use of digital technologies and their potential to support learners and teachers. WP3 examines the experiences of language teachers, including recruitment, career choices and support for teachers at the start of their careers. WP4 works with stakeholders to understand the wider systems that shape language education and to share findings from across the project.

The research is taking place across Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland, allowing the team to compare different language-learning contexts and identify factors that may support positive change.

TransCoLL is funded by a £1,287,289 Standard Grant from the UK Research and Innovation Arts and Humanities Research Council (UKRI AHRC).
